Plastic

  • Intrigued by the antique reverse-glass paintings hanging in my mother’s home, I set out to create a similar effect using colored translucent plastic acquired from the iconic Canal Plastics in lower Manhattan. After carefully painting directly onto the plastic, I then applied a clear plexiglass cover on top to approximate the reverse-glass effect without actually having to paint in reverse. When hanging from a wall, the pictures seem to float out in front, casting a subtle shadow. The total effect, unfortunately, can not be effectively captured in a photograph.
