Graffiti - New York

  • A suggestion from a street artist friend of mine that some of my work looked like it could be a form of graffiti led me to consider making virtual graffiti using locations from my neighborhood of Washington Heights, NYC. Over a few weeks during the summer, I took photos of walls and spaces that I thought I could use as backgrounds. At this time, I also switched from painting using a Wacom tablet to an iPad Air with an Apple Pencil. It was definitely a cognitive change to work directly on the surface I was looking at, rather than with split attention between the tablet and the screen. I was also excited to learn and use the great app, Procreate, for new work. This series represents a refreshing breakout of my art from the previous confines of the solid color background to the spaces of our real world, albeit a virtual composited one.
